Samsung Fridge Showing OF OF? It Is Demo Mode, Not a Fault

If your Samsung refrigerator’s display shows OF OF, the appliance is not broken. It is in Cooling Off mode — the setting Samsung uses for units sitting on a shop floor — and the compressor is deliberately disabled to save electricity.

Everything else works, which is what makes it convincing. The lights come on, the panel responds, the dispenser dispenses. Nothing gets cold, because the refrigerator has been told not to cool.

Samsung documents three ways this appears on the display: OF OF, O FF, or scrolling bars. All three mean the same thing.

How it gets switched on

Two ways, and neither involves anything being wrong.

You bought a floor model. It was in demo mode in the store and nobody took it out.

The panel got pressed. These are touch panels, and the button combination that toggles Cooling Off mode is not exotic. A cleaning cloth, a child, or a stack of containers leaning against the display can do it.

Turning it off

On most Samsung models, hold Energy Saver and Power Freeze together until you hear a chime. The display clears a few seconds later and the refrigerator starts cooling.

If that combination does nothing, Samsung’s documented fallback is to hold three buttons together instead — again, until a chime.

Button positions vary by model, and this is the point at which copying a combination from a video about a different refrigerator wastes an afternoon. Your model’s manual has the right one. If you do not have it, Samsung publishes manuals by model number, and the model label is inside the fridge compartment.

The part everyone gets wrong

This is the reason to read past the button combination.

You clear demo mode, the display returns to normal, and twenty minutes later the fridge is still warm. The obvious conclusion is that it did not work, or that there is a real fault underneath.

Samsung documents otherwise. The panel can take up to four hours to show your set temperature, and the compartment can take up to a full day to actually reach it — longer if the doors keep being opened while you check.

That is not a fault. It is a refrigerator that has been sitting at room temperature being asked to pull an entire insulated cabinet, and everything in it, down to temperature from a cold start.

So: turn it off, close the doors, and leave it alone. Check it tomorrow, not in half an hour. Opening the door every twenty minutes to see whether it is working yet is the single most effective way to make it take longer.

If it is still warm the next day

Then you have a genuine fault, and demo mode was a red herring. The diagnosis depends on what you are actually seeing:

Both compartments warm, nothing running. The cooling system is not operating — start with a compressor that will not run, which explains why a click every few minutes is the most informative symptom you can collect.

Fridge warm, freezer cold. Not a cooling failure at all. A cold freezer proves the compressor works, so the fault is in the airflow between compartments: a warm fridge with a cold freezer.

A fan error code alongside it. Samsung reports these separately — 21E for the freezer fan and 22E for the fridge fan — and they are different fans in different compartments.

The same thing on other brands

Every major manufacturer has this mode and every one displays it differently, which is why it catches people who switch brands.

The common thread is worth remembering: a refrigerator where the panel and lights work perfectly but nothing gets cold is more likely to be in demo mode than to have a failed compressor. Check the display before you check anything else, on any brand.

What this costs

Nothing. There is no part, no tool, and no technician involved.

The only cost is the day of waiting afterwards — and the food you throw out because you assumed the appliance was broken and did not check the display first.
