Samsung Washer 4C Error: US Code, European Twin, One Fault

4C on a US machine and 4E on a European one are the same water-supply fault. The fix is usually a mesh filter most owners do not know their washer has.

4C means your Samsung washer expected water and did not get enough of it in time. It is a fill problem — flow, not necessarily failure.

Before anything else, one thing worth knowing, because it explains why searching for this code is confusing: 4C and 4E are the same fault. US machines display 4C. European machines display 4E. Same condition, different market.

That is why a search for 4C hands you Samsung’s UK page written about 4E, and why the pages you find may reference settings and units that do not match your machine. It is not that anyone is wrong — it is that Samsung has no US-locale page for this code, so the search engine substitutes the nearest thing it has.

Samsung’s own order of checks

Their guidance is consistent across every market, and it starts with the two things that cost nothing.

Are both taps fully open? Not open — fully open. A tap turned most of the way passes enough water to look normal in a bucket and not enough to satisfy a machine filling against a timer. This is the single most common cause and it is free to rule out.

Are the hoses kinked? Look behind the machine, particularly where it has been pushed back against a wall or a skirting board. A hose can be crushed enough to restrict flow while looking perfectly straight from the front.

Then the filter almost nobody knows about

This is the one that actually fixes most 4C codes, and most owners have never seen it.

Inside the fill hose connection at the machine end there is a small mesh screen — a filter that stops grit and scale from the household supply reaching the water valve. It does its job quietly for years, and then it does not.

Samsung’s guidance is explicit: clean the mesh filter at least twice a year. In practice, almost nobody has ever cleaned it, which is why a washer that has worked for five years suddenly starts reporting a supply fault with nothing apparently changed.

To clear it:

  1. Turn off both taps.
  2. Have a towel ready — the hose holds water even with the taps closed.
  3. Unscrew the fill hose at the machine end.
  4. Look into the inlet. The mesh sits just inside. Rinse it, or brush it gently with something stiff and non-metallic.
  5. Reconnect, open the taps, and check for drips before running a cycle.

If your machine has both hot and cold inlets, do both. It is common for only one to be blocked, and the machine will report a supply fault when either is starved.

Then the supply itself

If the taps are open, the hoses are clear and the filters are clean, the question becomes whether your house is delivering enough water.

Samsung’s documentation gives a required supply pressure of 0.5 to 8 bar. That figure comes from its non-US pages, and in US units it is roughly 7 to 116 psi.

The quick test needs no gauge: run a tap elsewhere in the house. If pressure is noticeably weak everywhere, the washer is reporting a real problem that is not its own — a partially closed main, a pressure-reducing valve, or a supply issue. If everything else in the house is normal and only the washer is starved, the restriction is between the tap and the drum.

What is left after that

With supply, hoses and filters ruled out, the remaining candidate is the water inlet valve on the machine — the electrically operated valve that opens to let water in.

We are not going to give you a part number for it. Samsung uses different valve assemblies across model families, and a part matched to an error code rather than a model number is a gamble. Your model number is on a sticker inside the door or on the rear panel; a parts retailer’s fitment tool will return the right one.

One thing worth doing while you are back there

Since you have the machine pulled out and the taps off, look at the condition of the fill hoses themselves — bulges, corrosion at the crimps, or perishing rubber.

A burst washing machine fill hose is one of the most common causes of serious water damage in a home, and it fails without warning under mains pressure. If the hoses are original and the machine is old enough to be clogging its own filters, that is a cheap thing to replace while everything is already apart.

If your code is not 4C

Samsung reports the same fault as several different strings across model years, and publishes a number of codes that are not faults at all — including one that tells you the hot and cold hoses are crossed. The full list is in Samsung’s washer error codes.

Where 4C usually ends

Most 4C codes end at a tap, a kink, or that mesh filter — none of which cost anything beyond half an hour and a towel.

The valve is the paid outcome, and it is uncommon by comparison. If someone quotes you for a valve before anyone has looked inside the hose connection, ask whether the filter was checked.
