Bosch Dishwasher E15 Error: Don't Tilt It. Bosch Never Says To.
Bosch says a safety switch found water in the base and to shut the water off. The 45-degree tilt trick that dominates search results appears in none of it.
E15 is not a fault code. It is a safety system reporting that it worked.
Bosch’s US support page defines it in one sentence:
An E15 error code indicates that the safety switch has detected water in the base of the dishwasher. Your leakage protection system has activated.
Water has collected in the base — underneath the tub, inside the appliance, where it should never be. A float in that base rose, tripped a switch, and the machine stopped itself.
That distinction matters more than anything else on this page, because it decides what a sensible response looks like. The code is not the problem. The water is.
What Bosch tells you to do
Bosch’s guidance differs by region, and it is worth seeing both rather than one.
Bosch US gives exactly one instruction, and no owner-performed steps at all:

Bosch UK permits more:
You can check around the dishwasher base for leakage and the hoses for any visible kinks or damage, which could contribute to this appliance behaviour. If you notice any visible damage to the appliance hoses, you can replace those by ordering a spare part online… If the fault is not visible, we recommend booking an engineer appointment.
So: shut off the water, look at what you can see without moving the machine, and if you cannot see the cause, it is an engineer’s job. That is the whole of the manufacturer’s guidance from either market.
The advice we are not going to give you
Search this code and you will quickly meet a fix: tilt the dishwasher back to about 45 degrees to drain the water out of the base tray, stand it up, and the code clears.
It often does clear. That is exactly the problem.
It appears in neither Bosch page. Not the US one, not the UK one. What follows is our reasoning rather than a Bosch statement, and we think it is straightforward:
E15 fires because water reached a float in the base. Tilting the machine moves that water somewhere else. The float drops, the switch resets, the code goes away — and nothing about the leak has changed. You have not repaired anything. You have cleared the alarm.
The machine then goes back into service, takes on water again, and leaks again, except now the protection that caught it the first time has been reset by hand and the owner has been taught that the code is a nuisance to be cleared rather than a warning. The second time, there may be no one home.
There is a physical risk too — these machines are heavy, plumbed and wired, and tipping one about invites damage to the hoses and connections that may be the leak you are looking for.
If a code exists to tell you water is escaping inside your appliance, the one response guaranteed to be wrong is silencing it without finding the water.
What you can safely check
Within what Bosch UK permits, and without moving the machine:
The visible hoses. Fill and drain hoses, where you can see them, for kinks, splits, perished sections, and damp or crusted mineral deposits at the connections. A weeping joint leaves a white or greenish crust as it dries and re-wets.
Around the base. Use a torch along the kickplate and the floor at the sides. Water tracking out from under the machine tells you the base tray is already full.
Under the sink. The supply valve and the drain connection are the parts of this system that are actually accessible, and a leak there can find its way back along the hose to the appliance.
Recent history. Did anything change? A new disposal, a plumber’s visit, the machine pulled out for a floor or a cabinet job, a fitting disturbed. Leaks that begin the week after someone worked under the sink usually began under the sink.
If Bosch UK’s guidance applies to you and you find visible hose damage, their instruction is to replace it with a genuine spare ordered against your appliance details. We are not publishing a part number: Bosch hoses differ across model families, and the route to the correct one is your model number from the sticker on the edge of the door.
Why this is not a drain problem
These get confused constantly, because both look like “water where I don’t want it.”
A drain fault means water did not leave the tub — you open the door and there is standing water inside, where the dishes are. That is frequently an installation issue and frequently free to fix. E15 means water is in the base, below the tub, inside the machine’s structure. You cannot see it by opening the door. It got there by escaping from something that should have contained it.
The first is a plumbing geometry problem. The second is a leak. They do not share a diagnosis and they do not share a response.

How E15 usually ends
A visible hose fault. The best outcome, and the one case where Bosch UK explicitly allows an owner repair with a genuine part.
Nothing visible. The likeliest outcome, and both Bosch pages arrive at the same place: an engineer. The leak can be at the tub seal, the sump, the heat pump, a door seal or a connection you cannot see without dismantling the machine — and identifying which is the diagnostic work you would be paying for.
A code that clears on its own. Treat this as the least reassuring outcome on the page. Water evaporating out of the base drops the float and clears the code without the leak having stopped. A machine that throws E15 once a month is leaking every month.
The honest summary: this is one of the few codes where the correct answer really is to stop, shut off the water, and call someone. We would rather say that plainly than pad it out with steps that only look like progress.
