Why won't my dishwasher start?

Usually because something is preventing it rather than because it has failed. The three documented causes are a door that has not fully latched, the control lock being on, and a delayed start counting down. All three look identical from the front — a machine that has power and does nothing.

What does 2H or 4H mean on a dishwasher display?

It is a delay countdown, not an error code. GE's example is exactly this — the display shows the set number of hours before the wash begins, so 2H is two hours. Whirlpool's instruction to cancel it is to press the CANCEL/DRAIN button.

Can the dish rack stop a dishwasher starting?

Whirlpool says so directly: a lower dish rack installed backward can prevent the door from latching properly. It is worth checking on any machine whose racks have recently been taken out for cleaning.

Look at what is around the door rather than inside the machine. GE's instruction is to make sure nothing is preventing the door closing securely, naming trim, insulation, the cabinet and the countertop. New flooring that raises the machine slightly does the same thing.

How do I turn off the control lock?

It varies by model, which is why we are not publishing a sequence. Whirlpool's own instruction is to look for an illuminated lock icon on the display and then consult the owner's manual for how to disable it. The button is usually the one with a padlock printed on or beside it.

Dishwasher Won't Start? A Backwards Lower Rack Can Block the Door

A dishwasher that will not start is usually being prevented from starting, not broken. Three documented causes produce an identical symptom — a machine with power that simply does nothing — and none of them is a fault.

Start with the one that costs nothing to rule out.

Is it counting down?

GE’s example is precise:

If the Delay Hours or Delay Start feature is activated, the display will show the set amount of hours before the wash cycle will begin. For example, it will show 2H for 2 hours, or 4H for 4 hours.

People read that as an error code. A dishwasher showing “4H” looks like it is reporting a fault, when it is telling you it will start in four hours — usually because someone pressed a delay button while looking for a cycle, or because the machine is set for off-peak electricity.

Whirlpool’s fix is one button:

To cancel a delayed start cycle, press the CANCEL/DRAIN button.

Is the control locked?

Look for a lock icon on the display; if it’s illuminated, the control lock is enabled.

GE describes it as a child lock-out feature that prevents the dishwasher being turned on accidentally. When it is on, the start button does nothing at all — which reads exactly like a dead control board.

How you clear it varies by model, and we are not publishing a sequence because there is not a universal one. Whirlpool’s own instruction is to consult the owner’s manual. In practice it is the button with a small padlock printed on or beside it, usually held for a few seconds.

Worth checking first if a child has been near the machine, or if it was wiped down recently — these panels respond to a press through a cloth.

Has the door actually latched?

GE states the mechanism plainly:

The door latch must be fully engaged for the switch to signal that the door is closed properly and the dishwasher is ready to operate.

A door resting shut is not a door that has latched. There is nothing to see from the front. Push it firmly and listen for it.

Then the interesting part, which is why it is not latching. Both manufacturers name causes that are not the latch.

The lower rack, installed backward. Whirlpool:

A lower dish rack that is installed backward can also prevent the door from latching properly.

This is worth knowing because of when it happens: the racks come out for cleaning and go back the wrong way round. The rack looks right, the dishes go in normally, and the door will not close properly. Almost nobody connects the two events.

The kitchen itself. GE:

Make sure there is nothing preventing the door from closing securely, such as trim, insulation, the cabinet or countertop.

That is a list of things that are not the appliance. A dishwasher that stopped latching after work was done in the kitchen — new flooring raising it slightly, new trim, a replaced countertop, insulation packed in around it — is being obstructed, not failing.

And the load. A pan handle sticking up through the upper rack, a chopping board leaning forward, a tall glass in the wrong position. Any of these hold the door a millimetre open, which is enough.

Power cycle it

If the display is clear, the lock is off and the door latches properly:

Unplug the dishwasher or turn off the circuit breaker for approximately 1 minute. Afterward, reconnect the power or switch the breaker back on.

Whirlpool’s own timing. It clears a control state that has latched, and it costs a minute.

Treat the outcome as information rather than a repair. A reset that holds for months solved it. A reset you have to repeat weekly cleared a symptom.

When it starts but does not finish

Different problem, worth separating. If the machine starts, runs and then something is wrong at the end, you are not in this article:

Water left in the bottom. Often normal — see a dishwasher that is not draining, which starts with how much standing water is supposed to be there.
A code on the display. See how to find your dishwasher’s error code. Some are leak codes rather than fault codes, like Samsung’s LC.

When the free checks run out

If the door latches firmly, no lock icon is showing, no delay is set and a power cycle changes nothing, the remaining candidates are inside the machine: the door switch that tells the control the door is shut, the control board, or the supply to the machine.

Two things worth checking before calling anyone, in that last category:

Is it on a switched outlet? Many dishwashers are wired to a switch under the sink, put there for exactly this reason, and it gets knocked.

Is the breaker on? A dishwasher generally has one, unlike an electric dryer which has two.

Matching what the panel is doing

A number with an H after it. A countdown, not a code. One button.

A lock icon. Free, and invisible unless you look for it.

A door that will not latch. Then ask what changed — the racks came out, the kitchen was worked on, or something tall went in the load.

Nothing on the display at all. Check the switch under the sink and the breaker before assuming the machine.

All clear and still nothing. Now it is the door switch or the control, and that is the point where a diagnosis is worth paying for. Everything above this line is free, and between them they account for most of these.
