Freezer Frosting Up? First Check Whether It Is Supposed To
On a manual-defrost freezer frost is normal. On a frost-free one it is a fault — and turning the temperature down, which is most people's instinct, makes it worse.
Before diagnosing anything, find out whether your freezer is supposed to frost up. It is the fork the whole question turns on, and almost nothing written about this asks it first.
A manual-defrost freezer has no defrost heater. Moisture in the air freezes onto the cold surfaces, and it accumulates — that is how the design works. A thin white layer building over some months is not a fault. It is the chore you signed up for when you bought it.
A frost-free freezer runs an automatic defrost cycle every few hours: a heater warms the evaporator briefly, melts the accumulated frost, and the meltwater drains away. Under normal operation you should see no visible frost at all. If you are seeing it, something in that cycle is not working.
Same symptom, opposite meanings. Check your manual or your model number before going further.
If it is a manual-defrost freezer
Then the answer is short: defrost it when the layer reaches about a quarter of an inch, and expect that to take somewhere between a few months and a year depending on how humid your room is and how often the door opens.
Frost is not just untidy — it insulates. A packed layer makes the freezer work harder to hold temperature, so defrosting is maintenance rather than housekeeping.
Empty it, unplug it, leave the door open, put towels down. Do not chip at it. Everything below about faults does not apply to you.
If it is frost-free, start with the setting
This is the counterintuitive one, and it catches a lot of people.
The instinct on seeing frost is to turn the freezer colder. Frigidaire’s own guidance says that makes it worse — settings below the recommended 0°F can themselves cause frost.
So before anything else, put a thermometer inside and read it after a few hours. The target is 0°F (-18°C), which both GE and Frigidaire give as the correct operating point. If someone has already turned the dial down in response to the frost, that may be the entire problem, and it is free to fix.
Then the door
Both manufacturers point at the same place next, and it is the most common real cause.
Every time humid room air gets into a freezer, its moisture condenses and freezes on the first cold surface it meets. A door that does not seal properly lets that happen continuously.
GE describes the mechanism plainly: a worn or damaged gasket develops cracks that allow moisture into the freezer. Frigidaire’s check is to confirm the door is completely shut, that nothing is blocking it, and that the gasket has a good seal.
The paper test. Close the door on a sheet of paper so half of it is inside. Pull. There should be clear resistance. If it slides out freely, the seal is not making contact at that point.
Do this at four or five places around the whole door. Gaskets rarely fail evenly — a seal that is fine along three sides and open at one bottom corner produces exactly this symptom, and a quick glance will not find it.
Also check what the door is closing against. A drawer pushed out of its runner, an overfilled basket, or a package wedged at the front holds the door open by a few millimetres, which is all it takes.
Then where the frost actually is
The location tells you which system is at fault.
Frost on the walls, on the food, around the door. Humid air is getting in. That is the door and gasket path above.
Frost packed across the evaporator coil, behind the removable panel at the back of the freezer, is a different story. That is the surface the defrost cycle is supposed to clear, and a solid layer there means it is not clearing it.
GE names the two usual failures: a defrost timer — or on newer models the control that performs the same job — that stops initiating the cycle, and a defrost heater that no longer melts the frost when the cycle does run.
You do not need to identify which before you understand what you are dealing with. What matters is that this is a component failure, not a maintenance issue, and clearing the ice by hand will not resolve it.
The rate of return is the real diagnosis
Defrost the unit completely — empty, unplugged, door open, every trace of ice gone. Then run it normally and watch.
No frost after several weeks. Whatever caused it was a one-off: a door left ajar, a heavy grocery load, a hot day with the door open a lot.
Frost back within a couple of weeks, on the walls and door. The seal is still admitting humid air. Go back to the gasket.
Frost back within a couple of weeks, on the evaporator coil. The defrost system is failing. This is where a technician is worth calling, because distinguishing a dead heater from a control that is not calling for defrost takes measurements on a live circuit.
The same fault, two other symptoms
A failing defrost system rarely announces itself only as frost. If any of this is also happening, it is the same fault, not a second one:

One thing not to do
Never chip frost off with a knife, screwdriver or ice pick, however tempting it is when you are staring at an inch of it.
The evaporator behind that rear panel is thin aluminium tubing carrying refrigerant under pressure. A puncture is not a repair — it is the end of the appliance, and it usually happens in the last few minutes of a job that was nearly finished. Warm air and patience only.
