Refrigerator Making a Loud Noise? Most of Them Are Normal

Manufacturers publish which sounds are meant to happen, including a buzz every 15 minutes that means one specific thing. Here is how to spot the ones that matter.

Start from an uncomfortable premise: most refrigerator noises are supposed to happen, and manufacturers publish lists of them. Before diagnosing a fault, it is worth checking whether you have one.

This is also why searching for this problem is frustrating. The pages that rank are largely manufacturers’ “normal sounds” documents, which answer a question you did not ask — you said loud, which implies something is wrong, and they replied with reassurance. That mismatch is real, and this article tries to bridge it: what is documented as normal, where that documentation stops, and how to narrow down what is left.

What manufacturers document as normal

These are not vague reassurances. They are specific, and several come with a tell you can actually use.

Gurgling or bubbling. Samsung attributes this to refrigerant moving through the cooling system and changing from liquid to gas and back. It is the sound of the appliance working.

Hissing or sizzling. Both GE and Samsung document this as water dripping onto the defrost heater. GE adds that on self-defrost models it can also present as buzzing or an arcing sound. It happens during the defrost cycle, so it comes and goes.

Popping and cracking. GE attributes this to evaporator coils cooling after a defrost cycle. Samsung describes the related knocking as plastic parts contracting and expanding as temperature changes. Both are thermal, both are periodic, and neither is a fault.

Clicking and changing speed from the compressor. Samsung describes its compressor as sounding like a quiet engine that starts, runs at low or high speed, changes between them, clicks as it operates, and may sputter as the fan slows to a stop. Variable-speed compressors sound busier than the constant hum people remember from older refrigerators.

Three numbers worth knowing

Buried in that documentation are three specific figures that turn “is this normal?” into something you can check.

Seven seconds. GE documents buzzing during and after using the water dispenser as normal — but says it should not continue longer than about seven seconds after you stop dispensing. Time it. Longer than that is worth attention.

Fifteen minutes. GE documents a buzz roughly every fifteen minutes as the icemaker trying to fill with water. Their guidance is not to investigate the noise — it is to check that the water supply to the icemaker is actually turned on. A repeating buzz on that interval is the appliance telling you it is reaching for water that is not there.

That one is worth the price of admission. It is a precise, actionable diagnostic that almost nothing written about refrigerator noise mentions, and the fix is a valve rather than a part.

32 to 47 decibels. Samsung gives this as the normal operating range for its refrigerators. A phone sound meter app is not laboratory equipment, but it will comfortably distinguish “roughly in that range” from “obviously not,” which is the only distinction you need.

Where the documentation stops

Here is the honest part, and it is why so much writing on this topic is unreliable.

Manufacturers document thoroughly what is normal. They document very little about mapping an abnormal sound to a specific failed component. Nor do the parts retailers, who usually fill that gap for other symptoms.

So when you read that a grinding noise means a specific part and a squealing noise means another, understand what you are reading: technician experience, often accurate, but not published fact and not something anyone is checking. The same noise gets described as grinding, scraping, rattling and rumbling by four different people listening to the same appliance.

Diagnose by location and timing instead

Two questions narrow this far more reliably than trying to name the sound.

Where is it coming from?

Inside the freezer compartment. Almost always something touching a moving fan — usually ice. This is the most common real noise fault and it has a specific diagnosis.

From the back, low down. The compressor and condenser fan live there. A running hum is expected; a rhythmic rattle often means the condenser fan blade is catching on something, or the unit is not level.

From underneath. The drain pan. If it is not seated properly it vibrates against the frame, which sounds far more alarming than it is.

When does it happen?

Constantly whenever the appliance runs. A rotating component — a fan or the compressor.

Only every few hours, for a while, then stops. Almost certainly the defrost cycle, and almost certainly normal.

Only right after the door closes, then settles. Fans spinning back up to speed after the load change. Normal.

Only while dispensing water or ice. See the seven-second rule above.

The sounds that do mean something

Three are worth acting on rather than monitoring.

Rhythmic scraping or chirping from inside the freezer. A fan blade touching ice. It is a warning that arrives before the fan stalls entirely, and acting on it is cheaper than waiting. On Samsung models this often ends as a fan error code — 21E for the freezer fan or 22E for the fridge fan — and the underlying cause is usually frost that should have been cleared by the defrost cycle.

A click every two to five minutes, with the refrigerator not cooling. This is not a noise problem. It is the overload protector cutting a compressor that tried to start and failed, and it has a clock on it — see a compressor that will not run.

A sudden change from a sound you had for years. The absolute character of the noise matters less than the change. An appliance that has always gurgled and popped is fine. One that started doing something new last week is telling you something, even if nobody can name it from a description.

The practical answer

Check the normal list first, because the odds favour it. Use the three numbers if they apply. Then locate the sound and time it, rather than trying to find the right adjective.

And if the freezer is chirping, deal with it now rather than when it stops.
