LG Washer LE Error Code: LE1 Might Not Be the Washer at All
LG documents LE across four US support pages. LE1 is another matter: on a WashTower it is the dryer's drum motor, and on a top loader LG never defines it.
LE means the drum failed to turn. LG’s US support pages are consistent on that much: the tub fails to spin because the motor cannot operate properly.
LE1 is a different question, and the honest answer is that it depends on which machine you own — and on one of them, LG never answers it.
That is worth knowing before you buy anything, because the pages ranking for this code treat LE and LE1 as the same fault with the same fix.
On a WashTower, LE1 is the dryer
This is the finding that changes the most.
LG’s WashTower error code guide documents the two codes separately, and they belong to different appliances:
- LE — the washer. An issue with drum rotation.
- LE1 — the dryer. “The dryer’s drum is not rotating due to an issue with the drum motor.”
So if you own a WashTower, saw LE1, and have spent the evening reading about washer hall sensors, you have been diagnosing the wrong half of the machine. The laundry is wet because the dryer drum is not turning, not because the washer failed.
LG’s steps for it are short: remove items if the load is too heavy, try the cycle again, request service if it persists.
On a top load washer, LG does not define LE1 at all
LG publishes a support page titled “LG top load washing machine — What are LE and LE1 error codes?”
It defines LE:
LE means Motor Locker Error and this is an error that occurs when the motor cannot spin due to a coin or a foreign object being caught in the mechanism.
And then it stops. LE1 appears in the title and nowhere in the answer. It is also absent from LG’s own washer error code list, which runs to more than twenty codes and includes distinctions as fine as dE, dE1 and dE2 for three different door states.
We are not going to fill that gap with a guess. What it means in practice is that any page telling you confidently what LE1 means on an LG top loader is sourcing it from repair-trade experience rather than from LG — which can still be correct, but you should know which kind of claim you are acting on.
What LG does document for LE
Across three of its US pages the definition is stable, and the causes are given in a consistent order:
- Overloading. LG puts this first every time.
- A foreign object caught in the mechanism — a coin is the example LG uses. On top load machines it names the washboard specifically.
- Running the machine continuously without breaks. This one appears only in the WashTower guidance, and it is the most useful of the three because nobody repeats it.
That third cause deserves attention. It explains a pattern people report and misread: the machine works, works, works, and then throws LE on the fourth load of the day. That is not a component degrading. It is a motor that has been asked to work without a pause.
LG’s own pages disagree about the first step
Worth quoting both rather than picking one.
Two of LG’s US pages open with a power cycle: unplug the power cord, wait five minutes, and try the cycle again. Then reduce the load, selecting the bedding cycle for heavy items or large blankets. Then look for the foreign object.
LG’s top load page skips the power cycle entirely and starts with the physical check: remove any visible coins or foreign objects; then power off, take the laundry out, check the washboard, and remove anything caught with pliers or tweezers.
Neither order is wrong. The power cycle costs five minutes and clears a latched control state; the physical check costs nothing and finds the actual cause more often. If the drum will not turn by hand, start with the physical check, because no reset fixes a coin.
When it is not the load and not an object
If LE returns on a nearly empty drum, the two documented causes are gone and LG’s instruction is to have the machine diagnosed.
Repair-trade guidance — not LG’s documentation, and we are flagging that — puts the common failures in this order: the rotor position sensor (also called the hall sensor), the stator, the rotor itself, or the wiring between them and the control. The sensor is what tells the control how fast the drum is actually turning, so a sensor that has stopped reporting produces the same code as a drum that has stopped moving. The control cannot tell those apart, which is exactly why this code is not self-diagnosing.
There is a useful signal you can gather for free before anyone visits: does it fail on a small load as readily as a large one? A code that only appears under heavy loads suggests genuine mechanical drag — a bearing, or a load the machine really cannot turn. A code that appears with two towels in the drum points at the sensing and drive side instead.

One adjacent code worth ruling out
LG documents CE as “over-current in the electrical circuit of the motor.” Different code, same subsystem, and the two get confused in forum threads because both end at the motor. If your display is showing CE rather than LE, the machine is reporting a current fault rather than a rotation failure and the diagnosis starts somewhere else.

A code that survives an empty drum. That is the paid outcome, and it is the least likely of the four. Get the diagnosis before you buy the part — this is precisely the code where the sensor and the thing the sensor watches produce identical symptoms.
