Washer Stuck on Sensing? It Is a Measurement That Never Finishes

Sensing is not an error — it is the machine measuring before it fills. Stuck there means one measurement never completes, which narrows the list a lot.

Sensing is not an error message. It is the machine measuring. Before a modern washer commits to a cycle it works out how big the load is and, on most designs, how much water is in the drum — and it will not proceed until it has an answer it trusts.

So a washer stuck on sensing is not reporting a broken part. It is telling you that one of those measurements never completes, and it is waiting.

That reframing does most of the diagnostic work, because it makes the list short. You are not looking for anything that could be wrong with a washing machine. You are looking for whatever stops a measurement finishing.

First, an honest note about sources

This site normally works from manufacturer service documentation, and for error codes it quotes it directly.

There is none for this symptom. Sensing is a normal operating state rather than a fault code, so no manufacturer publishes a troubleshooting document for it. That absence is also why search results for this problem are unusually poor — there is no authoritative page for anything to anchor to.

So everything below comes from parts-retailer symptom guidance and field service reporting, not from service documentation. We are telling you that rather than presenting field knowledge as manufacturer fact. It also means every check here is observational or mechanical: nothing asks you to take an electrical measurement, because there is no published baseline to compare a reading against.

Start with the reset, because it is free

Unplug the washer for three to five minutes — long enough for the control board to lose its stored state — then restore power and start a cycle.

This clears a genuinely stuck control state and occasionally is the whole answer.

But treat what happens next as information. If it works once and the problem comes back within a few loads, the reset cleared a symptom rather than a cause, and the sections below are where the cause is.

Then the lid, and listen for the click

On a top loader, the machine will not proceed past sensing if it cannot confirm the lid is locked. This is a safety interlock, and it fails closed.

Open the lid and shut it firmly. You should hear an audible click as the lock engages, usually followed by the machine reacting.

  • No click at all. The lid lock assembly or its switch is the likely cause, and the machine is doing exactly what it should — refusing to spin a drum it cannot confirm is closed.
  • Click, but still stuck. The interlock is satisfied and the problem is elsewhere.

Also look at the strike — the tab on the lid that enters the lock. If it is bent or the lid sits proud, the switch may not be reached even though everything looks closed.

Then the water-level measurement

This is the one that most often produces the “sensing forever” behaviour, and the mechanism is worth understanding because it explains a strange failure.

Most washers do not measure water level directly. They measure air pressure. A tube runs from an air trap at the bottom of the tub up to a pressure sensor. As water rises it compresses air in that tube, and the sensor reads the pressure as a level.

That means the tube is part of the instrument. If it is kinked, split, disconnected, or blocked with detergent residue, the sensor reads a level that is not there — usually a level that never changes. The machine keeps waiting for a reading that will never arrive, and sits on sensing indefinitely.

This is a mechanical check you can do by eye and by hand: trace the hose, look for cracks and kinks, confirm both ends are properly attached, and check the trap is not blocked with residue.

It is also the cause most likely to be missed, because it is a length of tube rather than a component that looks like it could fail.

Then whether the drum can actually empty

A washer that finds water already in the drum when it expects none will not start filling.

Unplug the machine, put a towel and a shallow tray down, and check the drain path: the pump filter or access panel if your model has one, and the drain hose for kinks where the machine sits against the wall. Coins, buttons and hair ties end up in the pump and stop it running.

If you drain it and the cycle then proceeds normally, you have found it — though it is worth asking why it did not drain last time.

The mirror image is worth knowing too: a machine that cannot get water in reports it directly on a Samsung, as a 4C or 4E code, rather than sitting silently on sensing.

The part most often blamed

Field reporting attributes a large share of these to the shift actuator — the component that engages and disengages the drive so the machine can switch between agitating and spinning. On models that have one, its position is part of what the machine checks before starting.

We are flagging it because you will encounter it constantly in discussions of this symptom, and because it is genuinely a common failure. But note where it sits in this article: after the free checks, not before them. Replacing an actuator on a machine whose real problem was a split pressure hose is an expensive way to learn nothing.

On many top loaders the drum speed sensor is built into that same actuator, which is why a machine stuck on sensing and one reporting an F7 E1 code can be pointing at the same component from two directions.

An LG machine expresses the same underlying problem as a code rather than a stalled display: the control asks the drum to turn, gets no confirmation that it did, and reports an LE error. Whether that is the drum or the sensor watching the drum is the part neither machine can tell you.

If you do reach that point, the route to the right part is your model number — on a sticker under the lid or behind the door — entered into a parts retailer’s fitment tool, not a part number copied from a video about a different machine.

What the free checks resolve

The free checks resolve a meaningful share of these: a reset, a lid that was not latching, a kinked pressure hose, a blocked pump filter. None of them cost anything and all of them can be done in under an hour.

Beyond that it becomes a parts repair, and the honest position is that distinguishing an actuator fault from a control fault without service documentation is guesswork. That is a reasonable point to bring in a technician — not because the job is dangerous, but because buying parts in sequence until one works is more expensive than a diagnosis.
