Washing Machine Shaking Violently? A Quarter Inch Is the Line
GE publishes the number nobody quotes: movement up to 1/4 inch can be normal. Past that you are not chasing a levelling tweak, and when it started tells you why.
Movement up to a quarter of an inch can be normal on occasion. That is GE’s published wording, and it is the most useful sentence written about this symptom because it draws a line: some shaking is the machine working, and past that line you have an actual problem.
Almost every page on this topic tells you to level the machine. Very few tell you how much shaking you should have expected in the first place, or what separates a machine that needs a quarter turn on one foot from one that needs a different answer entirely.
The question that decides everything: when did it start?
Three machines, three causes.
It has always done this since installation. Shipping bolts if it is a front loader, or footing. Both are installation faults, and both are free to fix.
It started after the machine was moved — delivered, pulled out for a floor repair, pushed back after cleaning behind it. The feet are almost certainly no longer sitting the way they were.
It has been in the same spot for years and suddenly turned violent. This is the only one of the three that is not an installation problem, and it is the only one worth spending money on.
Answer that before you touch anything.
If it is new or was recently moved: the shipping bolts
Shipping bolts lock the drum assembly to the frame so it survives transport. With them fitted the suspension cannot do its job at all, and the machine shakes hard from the first spin.
Samsung publishes the detail that makes the usual advice unreliable: the number is not four. Most front loaders have four. Some have three. FlexWash models have seven. And top load washers do not have shipping bolts at all — so if you own a top loader, every article telling you to check them is wasting your time.
LG’s instruction adds the step people skip: remove all the fixing bolts from the rear with a suitable spanner, and block the bolt holes with the caps provided. The caps are in the box with the bolts, and an open hole is an open hole in the back of a machine that lives in a damp room.
If your machine has just been delivered and is shaking hard, stop running it. This is the one cause on this page where continuing does damage.
Shaking is not the only way bolts left in announce themselves. On a Whirlpool front loader they also produce an error code, and checking them is Whirlpool’s own first instruction for an F7 E1 — so a new machine doing both things at once is reporting one fault, not two.
The rock test
Whirlpool’s method, and it takes ten seconds:
Grip the washer from the top and rock back and forth, ensuring all four feet are firmly on the floor. Repeat, rocking the washer from side to side.
If it rocks, twist the feet until it does not. GE’s wording is that the legs should all be firmly touching the floor and locked in place.
Two things worth adding, because they are where people go wrong:
Level in both directions, not one. Side to side and front to back. A machine levelled across the front and sloping backwards will still walk.
Keep the legs as short as possible. A leg wound out three inches to reach a low spot in the floor is a lever, and it amplifies exactly the movement you are trying to stop. If the floor is that uneven, the floor is the problem.
Neither Whirlpool nor Samsung publishes a numeric levelness tolerance in their troubleshooting guidance — both defer to the individual model’s manual. We are not going to invent one. The rock test is the check they actually give you, and in practice it is the one that matters, because a machine that does not rock under hand pressure will not rock at speed either.
The floor, and what is around it
GE’s requirement is that the washer sits on “a good, solid floor.” That is qualitative, but the failure mode is specific: a floor that flexes under the machine turns every spin into a resonance, and no amount of foot adjustment compensates for a joist that moves.
The tell is easy — if the floor visibly bounces when you walk past the machine during a spin, you are looking at the floor and not the washer.
Two more from Samsung, both frequently mistaken for faults:
- Carpet. “Soft surfaces such as carpet will also cause some vibration.”
- Pedestals and risers. “Some vibration is expected when using a pedestal or riser, even if the washer is properly leveled.”
That second one is unusually candid for a manufacturer support page. If your machine is on a pedestal, some of the movement you are feeling is the pedestal and there is no adjustment that removes it.
And check the clearances. Samsung specifies one inch of separation between the washer and dryer and from any wall. This matters more than it sounds: a machine that is only vibrating will sound violent if it is knocking against the dryer, and people diagnose the noise rather than the gap.
The load, which is not the problem people think it is
The instinct is that overloading causes shaking. Underloading is at least as common a cause and almost never mentioned.
LG’s specification: the machine performs best at about two-thirds of tub capacity, because the laundry can move freely within the tub.
Samsung puts numbers on the range — a small load is 3 to 5 pounds, or one third full; a large load is 6 to 16 pounds, or three quarters full.
The reason underloading fails follows from LG’s wording rather than from any manufacturer claim about it: a single heavy item has nothing to distribute against. One soaked bath mat, one pair of jeans, one bunched duvet — the drum ends up with a concentrated weight on one side and no counterweight anywhere. That is a worse imbalance than a full drum of mixed washing, and it is why the machine that shakes on a small load and behaves on a big one is not broken.
Test it without waiting through a wash
LG publishes a procedure for exactly this, and it saves an hour per attempt:
Load the washing machine with a light load, press the power button, then press the rinse and spin cycle option. Press the start button and check if water is supplied that the washing machine does not rock or vibrate excessively and that it drains well during the spin cycle.
Rinse and spin gets you to the part of the cycle you are diagnosing in a few minutes rather than fifty. Note that LG has you check the drain in the same run — which is not incidental.
When shaking is really a drain problem
A drum that has not fully emptied is a drum spinning with several pounds of water sloshing in it, and water is the one load that cannot be balanced.
So if your machine is shaking violently and the laundry comes out wetter than it should, do not start with the feet. See a washing machine that will not drain — that is a different fault presenting as this one.
Most likely first
Newly delivered or recently moved. Shipping bolts or feet. Free, and the most likely answer by a wide margin.
Shakes on small loads, fine on full ones. Not a fault. Load distribution, and LG’s two-thirds figure is the target.
On carpet or a pedestal. Some of it is permanent and both manufacturers say so. Level it properly and accept the remainder.
Years in the same place, suddenly violent, and the load makes no difference. This is the one that is worth a technician. Worn suspension rods or shock absorbers on a front loader, or a failing bearing — and a bearing announces itself as noise as well as movement, usually a rumble or grinding that rises with drum speed, in a way that worn suspension does not.
That distinction is worth the trouble of making, because the two land in different places: suspension is an ordinary repair, while a bearing on many front loaders is fitted into a sealed outer tub and is where replacing usually wins.
A note on where we stop: we are not giving you a part number for suspension rods or shock absorbers. They are sold as sets, they differ across model families, and the route to the correct one is your model number through a parts retailer’s fitment tool. Guessing at this one means guessing at a part you have to take the machine apart to replace.
