Washing Machine Won't Drain? Three Numbers Decide Half of These

Whirlpool publishes exact limits for how far the drain hose may go into the standpipe and how high that pipe may be. Break them and the water siphons back out.

A washing machine that will not drain is often plumbed wrong rather than broken, and Whirlpool publishes exact numbers that decide it. Almost nothing written about this symptom gives them.

Three measurements, all of which you can check with a tape measure in five minutes, before you touch a pump or order a part.

First: is this actually a drain fault?

Most washers will not spin while there is still water in the drum — it is a balance and safety behaviour, not a fault. So a machine that cannot drain presents as sopping wet laundry and no spin, and people reasonably report it as a spin problem.

Look at the drum. Standing water means the drain is the fault and the spin will generally return once it clears.

It can also surface one appliance further along. A load that leaves here holding water arrives at the dryer needing two cycles, which is why a dryer that takes too long to dry is sometimes reporting a washer fault — GE’s own test for it is whether you can wring water out of the laundry as it comes out of the washer.

The three numbers

How far the hose goes into the standpipe: no more than 4.5 inches (113 mm).

This is the one that catches people, because pushing the hose deeper feels safer — it is less likely to jump out. What it actually does is create a siphon. Water that the pump has just pushed out runs straight back into the drum. The machine drains and refills itself, and to you it looks like it never drained at all.

Too deep and the hose end sits below the water, which lets drained water siphon back into the drum — so the machine looks as though it never drained. The permitted depth differs by manufacturer; use the manual for your model.

Standpipe height: minimum 30 inches (76.2 cm), maximum 96 inches (244 cm).

Too low and gravity siphons the drum empty as it fills, so the machine keeps taking water and never reaches level. Too high and the pump cannot lift water that far — it will run, sound normal, and move nothing.

There must be an air gap. The hose sits loosely in the drainpipe with air able to pass around it. Whirlpool’s instruction is explicit: do not seal the drain hose into the drainpipe with tape. Sealing it is what creates suction. The hose should be loose, yet secure.

That last one is worth dwelling on because it is done with good intentions. Someone tapes the hose in to stop it working loose or to stop smells, and creates the exact condition the design avoids.

These are Whirlpool’s numbers, and other manufacturers publish different ones. Samsung’s support page gives six to eight inches in one section and no more than six in another — both deeper than Whirlpool’s 4.5 inch maximum. The three figures are set out in Samsung’s washer error codes. The physics is agreed even where the numbers are not, so measure against the installation manual for your own model rather than any figure quoted online, this one included.

When to suspect installation

These causes cluster around a specific moment: something changed.

A machine that has drained fine for three years and suddenly stopped is unlikely to have moved its own hose. But a machine that was recently delivered, moved for a floor repair, pushed back after cleaning behind it, or plumbed into a new laundry room is a strong candidate — and so is one that a plumber or installer last touched.

If nothing has changed physically, go to the filter.

The drain pump filter

This is where genuine blockages live, and Whirlpool’s guidance is that it needs cleaning occasionally rather than never — which is how often most of them get cleaned.

It is usually behind a small hatch at the bottom front of the machine.

  1. Unplug the washer.
  2. Put a shallow tray and towels down. There is water in the drum and it is all coming out through this opening.
  3. Open the hatch. Many models have a short drain spout beside the filter — use it to empty the machine gradually rather than pulling the filter with a full drum.
  4. Unscrew the filter and clear it. Coins, buttons, hair ties, lint and the occasional sock.
  5. Check the impeller behind it turns freely.
  6. Refit firmly — a loose filter leaks under pressure.

If your machine has no accessible filter, the equivalent blockage sits in the pump itself and the panel has to come off, which is where this stops being a five-minute job.

Then the hose itself

With the filter clear, check the drain hose along its whole run for kinks — particularly where the machine was pushed back and the hose folded against the wall. A crushed hose looks fine from the front and passes almost nothing.

Also check inside the end of the hose for a build-up of detergent residue and lint, which narrows the bore gradually over years.

What is left

If the plumbing is within spec, the filter is clean and the hose is clear, the remaining candidate is the drain pump itself — either failed electrically or with a damaged impeller.

A pump that runs but moves nothing usually has a broken impeller or a blockage you have not reached. A pump that is silent when the cycle calls for drain has either failed or is not receiving power.

We are not giving you a part number. Drain pumps vary across model families even within the same brand, and the route to the right one is your model number — on a sticker inside the door or under the lid — through a parts retailer’s fitment tool.

  • The machine sits on sensing and never fills. Water already in the drum stops a fill starting, so a drain fault can present that way too. See a washer stuck on sensing.
  • The machine cannot get water in rather than out. On a Samsung that reports itself directly as a 4C or 4E code.

What each check is worth

The three measurements cost nothing and resolve a genuine share of these, particularly on machines that have recently moved. The filter costs an hour and a wet towel. The pump is the paid outcome and it is the least likely of the four.

Check the plumbing first. It is the only part of this that a repair technician will charge you to look at and then tell you was never broken.
