Dryer Takes Too Long to Dry? Check the Breaker Before the Vent

GE publishes it plainly: an electric dryer on 120V instead of 240V takes up to three times longer. And each vent elbow costs about ten feet of allowed run.

Safety firstA restricted dryer vent is a fire hazard, not just a performance problem — lint is fuel and a blocked duct traps heat. Never run a dryer without its lint screen in place. If your dryer is gas, leave the gas connection to a licensed technician. And do not open the breaker panel or attempt to measure the supply yourself: the check described here is looking at the breaker handles, nothing more. Confirming voltage at a 240V circuit is an electrician's job.

If your electric dryer runs but the clothes come out damp after a full cycle, check the breaker before you look at anything else. GE publishes the reason plainly: an electric dryer on a 120-volt circuit instead of 240 volts “will be as much as three times longer” to dry.

That fault is nearly invisible. A dryer needs 240 volts for its heating element but only 120 for the motor and controls, so when half of a double-pole breaker trips, the drum turns, the light comes on, the cycle runs, and almost no heat is produced. Nothing looks broken. The handle on a partially tripped breaker often does not sit in an obviously off position either.

The fix costs nothing: switch the dryer’s breaker fully off, then back on. If that restores normal drying, you have your answer — though a breaker that trips repeatedly is telling you something else and wants an electrician.

We are not going to tell you how to measure the voltage. That means opening a panel on a 240-volt circuit, and the check above gets you the same information for free.

Then the lint screen — and washing it, not looking at it

This is where most articles start and where most readers stop, because the screen looks clean.

Maytag’s wording is the important part: if you use fabric softener regularly, your lint screen may have residue build-up that is “typically not visible.”

Softener leaves a film across the mesh. It does not look like lint, it does not come off when you pull the fluff away, and it restricts airflow through a screen you have just inspected and cleared. GE’s instruction is to wash the screen with warm soapy water — not to brush it, not to shake it.

If you use dryer sheets or liquid softener and have never washed the screen, do that before spending an afternoon on the vent.

The vent, and the arithmetic nobody does

Here is where the diagnosis usually goes wrong. People measure the distance from the dryer to the wall, decide it is short, and rule the vent out.

LG publishes the actual limits for a 4-inch duct, and they are not a single number — they collapse as the duct turns.

LG also states “Do not use more than four 90° elbows” at all, and gives a deduction of 6 ft for each additional elbow.

Look at how far that bar retreats, because it is the point of this section: an elbow costs roughly ten feet. A vent that runs eight feet across a basement, turns four times to get around a joist and a duct, and exits the wall is nowhere near 28 feet of pipe — but in airflow terms it is close to the limit. Every turn the air has to make is resistance, and resistance is drying time.

Count the elbows. That is the measurement that matters.

Some machines do this measurement for you and report it as a number. On an LG, a d75, d80, d90 or d95 code states the duct blockage as a percentage — and at d90 LG’s instruction is to stop using the dryer until the exhaust has been cleaned.

Duct material, and the one most people have

Both manufacturers are specific and both rule out what is commonly installed:

  • 4-inch round duct only. GE: “We do not allow anything other than a 4” round duct.“ Maytag: “Use only 4” diameter heavy metal exhaust vent material.“
  • Plastic is out. GE: “Plastic duct work is no longer approved for a safe installation.” LG: avoid plastic or vinyl.
  • Semi-rigid and foil only on short runs. GE allows UL-listed semi-rigid or foil duct where the run is 8 feet or less.

The white plastic accordion duct sold for decades is the one to look for behind the machine. So is a long foil run — permitted material, wrong length.

And LG adds the failure that is easiest to create by accident: the duct must not be kinked, crushed, or dented. A dryer pushed back tight against the wall crushes its own transition duct, which is why this symptom so often appears right after someone cleaned behind the machine.

The end of the vent, which nobody checks

Maytag’s specification: exhaust hoods must be at least 12 inches (305 mm) from the ground or any object that may obstruct exhaust.

Go outside and look at the hood. Snow banked against it, a shrub grown across it, a stored bin, mulch piled up in a flowerbed, a flap painted shut, or a bird’s nest inside it — all of these produce exactly this symptom, and none of them are visible from the laundry room. This is a two-minute check that resolves a real share of cases and it is almost never mentioned.

When the dryer is not the problem at all

A dryer removes water. If the washer is handing it more water than it should, the dryer gets the blame for doing exactly what it was asked to do.

GE’s test is a good one and takes ten seconds: if water can be wrung or squeezed out of the laundry as it comes out of the washer — and the appropriate cycle was selected — the washer needs attention, not the dryer.

Two specific causes:

  • A low spin speed on a normal or heavy load. GE notes that a higher spin speed or an extended spin removes more water and decreases drying time. This is a settings problem, not a fault.
  • A washer that is not draining or spinning properly. Most machines will not spin while water remains in the drum, so a drain fault arrives at the dryer as a sopping load. If that sounds familiar, see a washing machine that will not drain — the dryer is reporting someone else’s fault.
  • Too much detergent. Whirlpool states that excess suds make a washer run at reduced spin speed, which produces exactly this. If your dryer got slower around the time you changed detergent, start at the washer’s SUD error — HE detergents run from 2x to 8x concentration, so the same capful can be four times the dose.

Load size, and why small loads dry badly

Two GE rules that run against instinct:

“Only dry one wash load at a time. Do not combine wash loads to make one large dryer load.” Combining is efficient in principle and counterproductive in practice — the drum needs room for the laundry to tumble and for air to move through it.

“If less than 5 items are to be dried, a timed dry cycle should be used for best results.” This is the one that surprises people. Automatic cycles decide when to stop by sensing moisture through contact with the laundry, and with two items in a large drum there is not enough contact to sense reliably. The cycle ends early, the clothes are damp, and it reads as a heating fault.

If your dryer only underperforms on small loads, try a timed cycle before diagnosing anything.

Is it heating at all?

Worth separating, because it is a different fault with different causes.

Maytag’s check: run a heated cycle empty for five minutes, then open the door and feel inside. Warm means the heat is working and you have an airflow or load problem — everything above applies.

Cold means you are in the wrong article, and the difference matters because the causes barely overlap. See a dryer that is not heating, which starts from the fact that an electric dryer has two breakers and a gas one has a shutoff valve whose handle tells you at a glance whether it is open.

Start with the cheapest match

An electric dryer that tumbles but barely warms. The breaker, and it is free. GE’s three-times-longer figure makes this the first thing to rule out, not the last.

A screen that looks clean and a softener habit. Wash it. Also free.

A vent with three or four turns in it. The most likely real fault, and the one that gets ruled out incorrectly because people measure length instead of counting elbows.

A hood blocked from the outside. Two minutes, no tools, and genuinely common.

The duct itself is the problem and you cannot change it. A run buried in a wall, or one that needs more bends than the specification allows, restricts a new conventional dryer exactly as much as the old one. Everything checks out and it still takes two cycles. Now it is a repair — usually a failed heating element, thermostat or moisture sensor. A typical load runs up to about 45 minutes, with delicates nearer 15 and bulky items such as bedding taking substantially longer. The number matters less than the change — a dryer that used to finish in 50 minutes and now needs two cycles has developed a fault, whatever the absolute figure.
