Dryer Not Heating? An Electric Dryer Has Two Breakers, Not One

Whirlpool documents it: an electric dryer runs on a 30-amp circuit fused on both sides, so one breaker turns the drum and a second one makes the heat.

Safety firstNever bypass a thermal fuse. It is a one-time fire-safety device that blows because the machine got too hot, and jumping it removes the protection that stopped a fire the first time. On a gas dryer, do not attempt any work on the burner, igniter, gas valve or supply line — opening the gas shutoff valve is the only gas-side step here, and everything past it belongs to a licensed technician. Unplug an electric dryer before removing any panel, and do not open the breaker panel to measure anything.

A dryer that tumbles is not a dryer that has power. On an electric machine the drum motor and the heating element are fed separately, and Whirlpool documents what that means in practice:

One of those breakers turns the drum. The other makes the heat. Lose the second and the dryer looks entirely normal — light on, drum turning, cycle counting down, clothes cold at the end.

This is why “it runs, so it can’t be electrical” is the reasoning that sends people to buy a heating element they did not need.

First, rule out the free one

Before the breaker panel, check what the machine was asked to do.

Whirlpool: “The Air Only cycle or Air/Fluff Only does not add heat to the dryer at any time during the cycle.”

GE: “The cycle should be set to a dry cycle and not fluff or cool down.”

Air Fluff runs the drum and the fan with no heat by design. It is on the same selector as everything else, it is easy to knock, and on some machines it is adjacent to the cycle you actually wanted. Nobody wants this to be the answer, which is why it is worth ruling out in five seconds rather than discovering it after buying a part.

Then establish which fault you actually have

Maytag publishes a clean test, and it matters because “not heating” and “not drying” get diagnosed as the same thing:

Select a heated timed cycle. Run the cycle for 5 minutes (empty dryer). Open the door and feel inside.

Warm inside means the heat source works. Your problem is airflow, load size or reduced power, and it belongs in a dryer that takes too long to dry — a different diagnostic order entirely.

Cold inside means you are in the right article. Keep going.

On an electric dryer: both breakers

Go to the panel and find the dryer’s breaker. It will be a double — two handles tied together, or one wide handle — because of the 30-amp circuit fused on both sides that Whirlpool describes. Whirlpool also states plainly that electric dryers require a 240-volt power supply.

Switch it fully off and back on. Half of a double-pole breaker can trip while the handle still looks roughly in position, and pushing it toward “on” from a partially tripped state does not always reset it. Off first, then on.

Maytag’s version of the same step covers older installations: “Check to make sure a household fuse has not blown or that a circuit breaker has tripped.”

The count is worth knowing before you go looking. Whirlpool documents that electric dryers use two household fuses or breakers while gas dryers use only one — so on a gas machine there is no second breaker to find, and a dryer that runs without heating is pointing at the gas side rather than the panel. The same figure decides how to check a dryer that will not start at all.

Some machines report this state directly rather than leaving you to infer it. Whirlpool’s L2 code means “low or no line voltage… keeping the dryer’s heater from turning on” — the fault described above, named by the machine. See Whirlpool’s dryer codes.

If this restores heat, you are done — but note that a breaker trips because something drew too much current. Once is a fault cleared. Repeatedly is an electrician’s problem, and it is not one to keep resetting.

We are not telling you to measure anything. That means working inside a live 240-volt panel, and the off-and-on test gives you the same answer for free.

On a gas dryer: the valve handle

Two manufacturers publish the identical check, and it is unusually concrete:

The drum of a gas dryer will turn, but the dryer will not heat if the gas shutoff valve is closed. Open the gas shutoff valve in the supply line. The valve is open when the handle is parallel to the gas pipe.

Parallel means running the same direction as the pipe. A handle sitting across the pipe — perpendicular — is closed.

This is worth checking even on a machine that worked yesterday. The valve sits behind the dryer at ankle height, and it gets knocked when anything is moved, cleaned behind, or worked on.

And if the dryer is newly installed, GE’s step is the one to start with: “Make sure the gas line has been turned on for new installations.” Delivery crews are often not permitted to open gas supply, so a brand-new gas dryer that tumbles and never heats is very frequently a valve nobody was allowed to turn.

That is the whole of the gas-side work you should do. Everything past the shutoff valve — burner, igniter, flame sensor, gas valve coils — belongs to a licensed technician, and GE says as much: “If the gas line is turned on and the appliance runs but still does not heat, we suggest that you contact service.”

Clear the vent before you replace anything

This is the step that decides whether your repair lasts.

Whirlpool’s guidance is that venting from the dryer to the outside must be cleaned every one to two years, or as needed when drying performance has decreased.

Here is why it belongs in an article about no heat rather than slow drying: a restricted vent traps heat inside the machine, and trapped heat is what takes out the safety components that then cut the heat off. The blockage is the cause and the dead component is the effect. Replace the effect, leave the cause, and you will be doing it again.

About the thermal fuse

You will find this part named constantly in discussions of this symptom, and it genuinely is a common cause. Two things to know, and one caveat.

The caveat first: none of the three manufacturer troubleshooting pages we sourced for this article mention the thermal fuse at all. What follows is repair-trade knowledge rather than manufacturer documentation, and you should know which kind of claim you are acting on.

It is a one-time device. A thermal fuse is not a resettable switch. When the dryer exceeds its temperature limit the fuse opens permanently and cuts the heating circuit, which produces exactly this symptom — a machine that runs, and runs cold.

It blew for a reason. The overwhelmingly common reason is restricted airflow: a blocked vent, a crushed duct, a lint-choked run. Fitting a new fuse into a machine with a blocked vent gets you a few loads before the new one goes the same way.

Never bypass one. Jumping a thermal fuse to “test” it, or leaving it jumped because the new part is on order, removes the device that stopped a fire the first time. This is the one place on this site where we would rather you stopped entirely than improvised.

We are not publishing a part number. Thermal fuses differ across model families and the route to the correct one is your model number — on a sticker inside the door or on the back panel — entered into a parts retailer’s fitment tool. We are also not publishing a resistance value to test one with, because a generic figure gets a working part condemned.

Sorting your symptom to a cause

A newly delivered gas dryer. The gas line, almost every time.

A blocked vent and the safety device it killed. This is the paid outcome, and the important part is the order: clear the vent, then replace the component. Not the other way round.

Everything checks out and it still runs cold. Heating element or thermostats on an electric machine; the burner assembly on a gas one. Get the diagnosis before the part — on this symptom, four free checks come first, and they resolve more of these than the parts do.
