Whirlpool Dryer Error Codes: Only Three Are Yours to Fix
Whirlpool splits them cleanly. AF, L2 and PF leave the dryer running and tell you what to do. Any code alternating F and E means service, with no steps to try.
Whirlpool’s dryer codes divide into two groups, and the division is the most useful thing about them.
Three codes leave the dryer running, tell you what is wrong, and let you clear the message yourself. Everything else — any code alternating between an F and an E — comes with no owner steps at all.
Whirlpool’s own wording for that second group:
If a code beginning with an “F” appears in the display, alternating between F# and E#, the dryer control has detected a problem that requires service.
So the first thing to establish is which group you are in. If the display is flashing between two codes, stop reading troubleshooting guides — the manufacturer has already told you where this ends.
AF: restricted airflow
Whirlpool’s definition names three separate causes, and the third is the one nobody checks:
Restricted airflow. It indicates that the lint screen or vent is clogged; the vent is crushed, kinked or has too many turns.
“Too many turns.” That is a manufacturer stating in a code definition that the shape of your duct can trigger a fault, not only its cleanliness.
It matters because of how people diagnose this. The instinct is to clean, and cleaning a duct that is within spec for length but has four bends in it does not fix anything for long. LG publishes the arithmetic — each elbow costs roughly ten feet of allowed run — and the full airflow diagnosis is in a dryer that takes too long to dry.
The dryer keeps running with AF displayed, and Whirlpool lets you dismiss it:
Touch any key to clear the code from the display and return to the estimated time remaining.
That is a convenience, not a fix. The code is reporting restricted airflow, and restricted airflow is what puts trapped heat and accumulated lint in the same place. Clear the vent, then clear the code — not the other way round.
If your machine is an LG rather than a Whirlpool, the equivalent codes are more precise still: d75, d80, d90 and d95 state the blockage as a percentage.
L2: low or no line voltage
This is the most useful code Whirlpool publishes, because it names a fault that is otherwise invisible.
Low or no line voltage. There may be a problem with your home power supply, keeping the dryer’s heater from turning on.
Read what that describes. The drum turns. The cycle counts down. The light works. And no heat is produced, because the heating element is the part that needs the full supply.
Whirlpool’s steps: check household fuses and breakers, verify the power cord is properly installed, and consult a qualified electrician if the issue persists.
The reason this happens so often on electric dryers is structural — they run on a circuit fused on both sides, so there are two breakers, and losing one leaves the machine looking alive while the heat is gone. That whole diagnosis, including GE’s figure that a dryer on 120 volts instead of 240 takes as much as three times longer, is in a dryer that is not heating.
Like AF, the dryer keeps running and the code can be dismissed with any pad. Like AF, dismissing it changes nothing.
We are not telling you how to measure the supply. Whirlpool’s own escalation is an electrician, and that is the correct stopping point: this is a 240-volt circuit and a repeated L2 is a wiring problem rather than an appliance problem.
PF: power failure
The reassuring one.
Power failure. It indicates that the drying cycle has been interrupted by a power failure. Touch and hold START to restart the dryer cycle or press POWER to clear the display.
Nothing is broken. The electricity went off mid-cycle and the machine is telling you the load did not finish. Restart it.
Worth knowing mainly so you do not go looking for a fault after a storm or a brief outage. If PF appears repeatedly without any obvious power cut, that is worth an electrician’s attention for the same reason L2 is.
The F codes, and why we are not listing them
Whirlpool publishes individual pages for each F#E# combination, and you will find sites that reproduce the whole list with confident explanations.
We are not going to, and the reason is Whirlpool’s own instruction: the entire family requires service. Listing the meanings invites self-diagnosis past the point the manufacturer stops, which on this family means someone opening a cabinet containing a heating element and, on a gas machine, a burner.
What is worth knowing is the shape of it. F codes are control-detected faults — sensors, the control board, the motor circuit, the heater circuit. They are the category where a technician’s diagnosis is worth paying for before any part is bought, because the code narrows the subsystem without naming the component.
Note the code exactly as it appears, including whether it alternates. F4E3 and
F4 E3 and AF can be the same fault on Whirlpool’s own pages — AF and F4E3
share a definition — and a mis-transcribed code sends you to the wrong page.
How this compares to other brands
Worth knowing if you are reading advice written for a different machine:
- Samsung groups codes into families rather than listing them singly, and two whole families resolve to the vent.
- LG encodes the blockage percentage into the code itself, so d80 means 80% blocked.
- Whirlpool splits by who should act, which is the approach that gets a reader to the right decision fastest even though it tells you least about the fault.
None of them is wrong. They are three different answers to the same design question, and knowing which one you are holding stops you applying another brand’s logic to your machine.

AF. Your vent. Clean it, and count the bends before assuming it was only dirty.
