Dryer Repair vs Replace? A New One Saves $210 Over Its Whole Life

ENERGY STAR puts the saving from a certified electric dryer at about $210 across the product's lifetime — not per year. Only one kind of replacement changes that.

ENERGY STAR’s saving for a certified full-size electric dryer is about $210 — over the life of the product, not per year.

That is their wording, and it is the most useful sentence for this decision because of how often it gets misread. On the 12-year lifetime ENERGY STAR uses as its own planning assumption, $210 works out at roughly $17 a year.

So the honest starting position: the energy argument for replacing a dryer is weaker than for any other major appliance in the house. It will not pay for a machine, and it should not tip a repair decision.

Unless you buy a different kind of dryer, which is where this gets interesting.

First: is anything actually broken?

Before weighing anything, rule out the faults that cost nothing, because a surprising share of “the dryer is finished” turns out to be one of these:

  • A tripped breaker. An electric dryer has two, and losing the one feeding the heating element leaves the drum turning normally with no heat. See a dryer that is not heating.
  • A lint screen with softener residue, which is invisible and blocks airflow through a screen that looks clean.
  • A restricted vent, which is the single most common cause of a dryer that takes two cycles. See a dryer that takes too long to dry.

None of those is a reason to buy anything, and all three are frequently misdiagnosed as a dying machine.

The question that actually decides it

Not “how old is it” and not “how much is the repair.” This one:

Is your problem the dryer, or is it the duct?

That distinction matters more here than for any other appliance, because a conventional dryer’s most common failure mode is not really its own. Vent restriction causes long dry times, causes overheating, and causes overheating to take out safety components. On an LG the machine will even tell you the blockage as a percentage.

And a duct that is too long, or has too many bends, restricts a new dryer exactly as much as it restricted the old one.

If you replace a conventional dryer with another conventional dryer, you buy a new appliance and keep the fault. That is the scenario worth spotting before spending anything: repeated airflow problems on a machine whose duct runs a long way, or turns several times, or disappears into a wall.

The one replacement that changes the maths

Seventy per cent is a different order of magnitude from $210 across a lifetime. But the reason to raise it in an article about repair decisions is not the energy — it is the second consequence.

They do not need a vent.

A heat pump dryer works as a closed loop system by heating the air and using it to remove moisture from the clothes, then reusing that air once the moisture is removed.

Since a heat pump dryer does not release air through a home’s exterior, there is no need for a dryer vent.

Read that against everything above. If your recurring problem is a duct that is too long, too bent, buried in a wall, or impossible to keep clear, a heat pump dryer does not manage that problem — it deletes it. There is no duct to block, no hood to get obstructed, no lint accumulating somewhere you cannot reach.

ENERGY STAR also notes the installation angle:

For homes without an existing vent, a heat pump dryer can offer a significant cost savings during installation, since the investment in putting in a new vent is not needed.

The two catches, stated plainly

It costs more up front. ENERGY STAR’s own framing: “For a higher initial purchase, a heat pump model can save more energy and money with each load.” This is a larger purchase justified over time, not a cheaper one.

The water has to go somewhere. The condenser pulls moisture out of the air and it becomes liquid:

A heat pump dryer’s condenser removes moisture from the air during the drying process, resulting in water that needs to be drained. Many manufacturers sell a device that allows heat pump dryers in some configurations to use the clothes washer drain to remove the water.

Some models collect it in a tank you empty; some can be plumbed. Check this before buying, because a laundry position with no drain nearby turns a convenience into a chore twice a week.

One more worth knowing rather than discovering: heat pump dryers generally run longer per load at lower temperatures. That is how they achieve the efficiency. Gentler on fabrics, slower on the clock.

What decides it if the vent is fine

Then it is an ordinary repair decision, made by the component:

Usually worth repairing. Thermal fuses, thermostats, heating elements, belts, rollers, idler pulleys, door switches. These are accessible, well-documented parts on a machine that is mechanically simple — a dryer is a drum, a motor, a heater and a fan.

That simplicity is the reason dryers are worth repairing more often than most appliances. There is less to fail and less that is expensive when it does.

Where it tips. A failed motor or a main control board on a machine past ten years, or a drum or bearing failure that means substantial dismantling.

And if a safety component keeps failing, do not keep replacing it — a thermal fuse that blows twice is reporting the airflow problem above, not a faulty part.
