Refrigerator Repair or Replace? EPA's Own Numbers Disagree
ENERGY STAR says an old fridge uses about 20% more energy. Its own factsheet says about twice as much. That gap decides whether replacing pays for itself.
The energy argument for replacing a refrigerator is real, and it is smaller than you have been told. EPA publishes two figures for it that differ by about five times, and which one you believe decides the whole question.
Before that, though, the thing that actually settles it: this decision is made by the component that failed, not by the appliance. Almost every page ranking for this query gives you a price threshold. None of them ask what broke.
The EPA numbers, both of them
The current ENERGY STAR refrigerators page states:
On average, an old refrigerator uses about 20% more energy than a model that has earned the ENERGY STAR.
And, for the lifetime saving:
By properly recycling your old refrigerator and replacing it with a new ENERGY STAR certified refrigerator, you can save about $150 over the 12-year lifetime of the product.
ENERGY STAR’s own “Flip Your Fridge” factsheet says something quite different:
An old refrigerator uses about twice as much energy as a new ENERGY STAR refrigerator. Replacing your old refrigerator with a new one that has earned the ENERGY STAR could save you more than $300 over the next five years.
Put those side by side and the gap is hard to miss. One works out at roughly $12.50 a year in savings. The other is $60 a year. Same agency, same programme, same appliance.
Our reading — and it is a reading, not something EPA states — is that “old” is doing different work in each. A refrigerator from the early 1990s and one from 2012 are both “old” in ordinary speech, and they are nothing alike in consumption. The factsheet is the older document and reads as though it is comparing against a much earlier vintage.
Either way: plan on the smaller number. If the maths works at $150 over twelve years, it works. If it only works at $300 over five, you are relying on the more optimistic of two official figures that contradict each other.
A better way to do it than either average
ENERGY STAR publishes two more numbers that are more useful together than separately:
- A refrigerator over 15 years old: “could be costing you more about $95 per year to run.”
- A new top-freezer model — the least energy-hungry configuration — $45 per year.
Subtract. About $50 a year is what replacing a 15-year-old fridge with an efficient new one realistically saves, and that figure sits between the two official claims rather than picking a side.
Fifty dollars a year is worth having. It is not worth scrapping a working appliance for, and it will not pay for a new refrigerator inside a decade.
It is also more than most appliances offer, because a fridge runs continuously and a dishwasher does not. Running the same exercise on whether a dishwasher is worth repairing puts the ceiling at roughly 115 kWh a year — small enough that the energy argument barely enters the decision.
One more, because it changes the answer for a lot of households:
By keeping a second refrigerator in your basement or garage, you could be wasting $125 per year.
If the fridge that just failed is the spare, the cheapest possible outcome is not repairing it and not replacing it.
What actually decides it: which part failed
Here is the framework, and it needs a diagnosis rather than a price list.
The sealed system — compressor, refrigerant, condenser, evaporator. This is the expensive category. It is specialist work requiring recovery equipment and certification, it is priced accordingly, and it usually arrives on an appliance that has already reached the 12-year mark ENERGY STAR plans around. This is where replacement generally wins.
If your fridge is warm, running constantly, or silent when it should not be, start at a refrigerator compressor that is not running — because “the compressor has failed” is a conclusion people reach far more often than it is true, and a start relay or a control board is a very different bill.
Everything else. Fans, thermistors, defrost heaters, dampers, door gaskets, water valves, ice makers, control boards. These are parts-and-labour repairs on an appliance that is otherwise intact, and on a fridge under about ten years old they are usually worth doing.
Several of the most alarming symptoms live in this second category, which is exactly why the diagnosis has to come first:
- Fridge warm, freezer fine. Almost always airflow or defrost rather than cooling. See a refrigerator not cooling but freezer working.
- Ice building up in the freezer. A defrost or seal problem, not a dying compressor. See a freezer frosting up.
- Loud noise. Frequently a fan fouling ice — cheap — rather than the compressor. See a refrigerator making a loud noise.
A quote for a sealed-system repair on an eleven-year-old fridge is a replace decision. A quote for an evaporator fan on the same fridge is not, and the two sound equally serious when a technician says them out loud.
Why we are not giving you a price threshold
You will have seen the rule: replace if the repair costs more than half the price of a new one. It is a reasonable instinct and it circulates everywhere, but it is a rule of thumb with no authority behind it — no manufacturer, standards body or agency publishes it — and we are not going to dress it up as one.
We are also not publishing repair cost ranges. The figures that dominate this search come from quote aggregators using proprietary data we cannot check, and they vary enough by region that a national average is not a number so much as an average of numbers. Repeating them would mean presenting someone else’s unverifiable estimate as a fact, which is the thing this site exists not to do.

Over 12 years old with a sealed-system failure. Replace. This is the one case where the age, the repair category and the energy saving all point the same way.
Over 15 years old and still working. ENERGY STAR’s $95-a-year figure applies to you, and replacing is a reasonable planned purchase — but it is a purchase decision, not a repair decision, and there is no urgency in it.
The broken one is your second fridge. Retiring it saves ENERGY STAR’s $125 a year and costs nothing. That is the best return available in this entire article.
