Is It Worth Repairing a Dishwasher? The Ceiling Is 115 kWh a Year
The $220-a-year saving is measured against handwashing, not against your machine. Replacing a legal-minimum dishwasher with the most efficient one saves 115 kWh.
The number everyone quotes for this decision is the wrong number.
ENERGY STAR publishes that a new certified dishwasher can cut utility bills by about $220 per year and save 8,400 gallons of water. Both figures are real. Both are measured against washing dishes by hand.
If you are reading this, you own a dishwasher. The comparison does not describe your situation, and using it to justify replacing a repairable machine overstates the case by an enormous margin.

The actual ceiling
ENERGY STAR publishes the criteria a dishwasher must meet, alongside the federal standard that every machine sold must already meet. The distance between them is the maximum possible efficiency gain from replacing.
For a standard-size machine — 8 or more place settings plus 6 serving pieces:

For a compact machine, the same three tiers run 260 → 222 → 155 kWh/year, and 4.5 → 3.50 → 2.0 gallons per cycle.
So the best case is 355 down to 240: about 115 kWh a year. That is our arithmetic on ENERGY STAR’s published numbers, not a figure EPA states.
Multiply 115 by the rate on your own electricity bill. For most US households that lands somewhere in the region of ten to twenty-five dollars a year.
That is the whole energy argument for replacing a dishwasher, and it is worth knowing before you let it influence a repair decision. Water is a genuine bonus — roughly 3.3 gallons a cycle — but it does not change the shape of the answer.
Why this differs from refrigerators
Worth stating plainly, because the two decisions get treated as one.
A refrigerator runs continuously, so inefficiency compounds every hour of every day. A dishwasher runs for an hour or so, a few times a week. Even a large percentage improvement applies to a small base.

Which means the dishwasher decision is almost entirely about the repair itself.
What actually decides it: which part failed
The same framework as any appliance, and it needs a diagnosis rather than a threshold.
Usually worth repairing. Filters, spray arms, the door seal, the drain pump, the inlet valve, a float switch, a soap dispenser. These are accessible parts on a machine that is otherwise sound, and several of them are not repairs at all — they are cleaning.
Often not a repair at all. Poor drying is the clearest case: it is usually rinse aid, water temperature or the wrong dry option, and on a Bosch there is no heating element to fail in the first place. See a dishwasher that is not drying before pricing anything.
A large share of what gets reported as a broken dishwasher is in this category. Before assuming a fault, note that one to two cups of standing water in the bottom is normal, and that a machine which will not drain is frequently an installation problem rather than a failure.
Usually not worth it on an older machine. The main control board, the circulation motor or pump assembly, and any leak from the tub itself. These are the expensive category, and they tend to arrive on machines that have other things going wrong at the same time.
The leak exception
One case genuinely changes the maths, and it is not about money spent on the appliance.
A dishwasher leaking into its base can damage cabinets, flooring and subfloor — and none of that appears on the repair quote. It is the one failure mode where continuing to run the machine while you decide is actively expensive.

The age question, honestly
We are not publishing a per-brand lifespan table, because the by-brand figures circulating have no traceable source and a made-up number here would decide real spending. Category figures are a different matter: NAHB’s survey of manufacturers puts dishwashers at 9 years — the shortest of any major appliance — and the sourcing behind that, along with its limits, is set out in how long appliances last.
What can be said: ENERGY STAR uses a 12-year lifetime as its planning assumption when calculating appliance savings. That is a reasonable planning figure precisely because it is the one an agency publishes and uses, not because it predicts your machine.
Used sensibly, it means a five-year-old dishwasher with a failed drain pump has most of its life left, and a fourteen-year-old one with a failed control board does not.

You will meet the rule that says replace if the repair costs more than half a new machine. It is a reasonable instinct with no authority behind it — no manufacturer, standards body or agency publishes it — and we are not going to present it as one.

A drainage complaint. Check first whether you have a fault at all, then the installation. A meaningful share of these cost nothing.
A cleaning-category part. Repair. The energy case for replacing is around $10–25 a year and will not pay for a machine.
A control board or pump on a machine past ten years. This is where replacing starts to win, and it wins on the repair cost and the remaining life, not on efficiency.
A leak. Take it out of service now, decide later. This is the only outcome on this page with a cost that grows while you think about it.
