How Long Do Appliances Last? One Real Source, and It's From 2006

NAHB surveyed manufacturers and published the only traceable figures: washers 10 years, dryers 13, dishwashers 9. Every by-brand chart you have seen is unsourced.

There is exactly one traceable source for how long US appliances last, and it is a telephone survey from 2006.

Everything else — the by-brand charts, the “2026 lifespan data”, the tables that confidently separate one manufacturer from another — either traces back to that survey or traces back to nothing.

Here is the source, its numbers, and its limits.

The numbers

The most useful line in that table

Washers 10, dryers 13.

They are sold as a pair, delivered on the same day, and assumed to wear out together. On the only sourced figures available, the washer goes roughly three years first — and a washing machine has considerably more that can fail expensively.

That changes a decision people make badly. When the washer fails at nine or ten years, the instinct is to replace both, because matching. On these numbers the dryer has years left, and dryers are also the appliance with the weakest energy case for replacing — roughly $17 a year.

The other pairing worth noting: standard refrigerators 13, compact 9. If the broken one is the garage spare, it was never expected to last as long.

What the study actually is

This matters more than the numbers, and almost nobody who quotes them says it.

In the summer of 2006, NAHB conducted a comprehensive telephone survey of manufacturers, trade associations and researchers to develop information about the longevity of housing components.

Read that carefully. It is not a failure-rate study. Nobody tracked a population of machines and recorded when they died. NAHB phoned manufacturers and trade bodies and asked how long their products last.

That is a legitimate way to gather figures and it is the best available, but it is not measurement. And it is from summer 2006 — appliances have gained a great deal of electronics since. Whether that has made them shorter or longer lived is not something we have a source for, so we are not going to tell you.

NAHB’s own warnings

The study undercuts naive use of its own table, in its own words:

The life expectancy of a typical appliance depends to a great extent on the use it receives.

And:

Appliances are often replaced long before they are worn out because changes in styling, technology and consumer preferences make newer products more desirable.

Which means the figures partly describe when people replace appliances, not only when appliances stop working. A dishwasher at nine years is not a dishwasher that has failed; it is the age at which dishwashers tend to leave service.

Why we do not publish a by-brand table

You will find plenty of them. Confident numbers separating one manufacturer from another, usually updated to the current year in the title.

NAHB publishes no per-brand figures at all. We could not find a traceable source for any of them — not a manufacturer, not a standards body, not a study.

Be clear about what that does and does not mean. It does not mean all brands last equally long; we have no source for that either. It means the specific numbers being presented to you as fact are not sourced, and a number you cannot trace is not evidence, however precise it looks.

The same reasoning is why we do not publish repair prices.

Two numbers that disagree, and why both are right

If you have read our repair-or-replace guides you will have seen 12 years used repeatedly. NAHB says 9 for a dishwasher and 13 for a fridge. Neither is wrong, because they answer different questions.

ENERGY STAR’s 12 years is a planning assumption for calculating energy savings. It is a modelling input — “over how many years should we spread this saving” — not a prediction about your machine.

NAHB’s figures are an estimate of service life gathered from manufacturers.

Use NAHB’s number to judge how much life a repair is buying. Use ENERGY STAR’s when you are weighing energy savings, because that is the assumption their own dollar figures were built on. Mixing them produces arithmetic that looks precise and means nothing.

How to actually use this

Find the age. The serial number tells you, and on most machines the rating plate carries a date. Inside the door on a dishwasher, under the lid or behind the door on laundry, inside the fridge compartment.

Compare against the category, not the brand. Your dishwasher is nine years old and NAHB says nine. That does not mean it is finished. It means a repair on it is buying years from the far end of the range rather than the near end, and that changes what a quote is worth.

Weight it by use. NAHB’s first caveat is the most important one. A machine running two loads a day is not on the same clock as one running two a week, and the table cannot see the difference.

What to take from this

A ten-year-old washer is at its expected life. A ten-year-old dryer has three years to go. A nine-year-old dishwasher is at the end of the shortest lifespan in the table.

None of those is a verdict. They are the background against which a specific repair quote for a specific failed component becomes cheap or expensive — and that is the only thing this number is good for.

Anyone offering you more precision than that, particularly by brand, is offering you a number they cannot source.
