Dryer Drum Not Turning? Turn It by Hand — That Is the Whole Test

GE's check settles it in seconds: if the drum turns freely by hand, the belt is broken or loose. And LG explains why a load that fitted can stop it partway through.

Safety firstUnplug an electric dryer before reaching into the drum for anything other than laundry, and never put a hand near the drum while a cycle is live. Belt and roller work means opening the cabinet on a machine with mains wiring, a heater and — on a gas model — a burner and gas line, which is why both manufacturers sourced here send this to service rather than describing the repair. Leave anything past the drum to a technician.

Open the door, reach in, and turn the drum with your hand. That single check splits this symptom in two, and GE publishes it:

Make sure the drum does not turn freely (turns counter-clockwise during operation). If it does, the belt may be broken or loose and service will be required.

An intact drive belt wraps the drum and holds it against the motor. You should feel resistance. A drum that spins freely, like a wheel, is a drum with nothing connecting it to the motor.

That is a definitive answer, it takes ten seconds, and it costs nothing. Do it with the machine unplugged.

Before that, the two free explanations

Rule these out first, because neither is a fault.

Did the door get opened? LG:

It’s normal for the drum to pause if the door is opened during operation.

On a gas model the interior light comes on and Start/Pause blinks. On an electric LG you may see a dE door code with Start/Pause blinking. In both cases: close the door, press Start/Pause. The machine did what it was designed to do.

Is it very full? This is where LG explains something genuinely counterintuitive:

Clothes shrink in volume when wet in a washing machine, but they increase in volume as they dry in a dryer. If the dryer is overloaded, the clothes will expand and overfill the drum.

Read that against the most confusing version of this symptom: the dryer started normally and stopped turning partway through. The load fitted when you put it in. Then it dried, expanded, and packed the drum tight enough to bind it.

Nothing failed. The load simply became bigger than the drum.

GE names the other half of the same problem:

A load of heavy, wet clothes, such as towels or blue jeans, may cause the drive belt to slip.

Towels and jeans, which are precisely the loads people run on their own because they take longest. Heavy and wet is the worst case for a belt.

And the opposite problem

LG also documents a load being too small:

Add more laundry so the drum is about half full.

Their reasoning is about sensing rather than turning:

The clothes rotate inside the drum, touching the moisture sensor, which detects the moisture level of the laundry. However, if the laundry load is too small, it may not touch the moisture sensor.

So both extremes cause trouble and they cause different trouble. Overloading binds the drum; underloading blinds the sensor and ends the cycle early. Half full is LG’s target.

LG’s dividing line

Does the drum still not rotate even after emptying the drum and pressing Start/Pause? Your unit may require service.

That is the cleanest test on this page after the hand-turn. Take everything out. An empty drum that will not turn has no load excuse left.

Combine the two and you have your answer without tools:

That last row is the one worth reading carefully. A drum that resists your hand but will not turn under power is not a belt problem. The belt is doing its job and something else is not.

What is in that last row

Neither manufacturer page we sourced goes further than “service is recommended”, so what follows is repair-trade knowledge rather than manufacturer documentation, and you should know which kind of claim you are acting on.

The usual candidates are the drum support rollers — which carry the drum’s weight and seize or flatten with age — the idler pulley that keeps the belt tensioned, and the motor itself. Failing rollers make the motor work far harder to turn the drum, which is why this fault often arrives with noise before it arrives with a stop.

A dryer that has been squealing or rumbling for weeks and has now stopped turning is telling a longer story than one that stopped without warning.

Belt and roller work means opening the cabinet of a mains appliance that contains a heating element and, on a gas model, a burner and a gas line. It is also not the quick job it looks like in videos — on many machines the drum has to come out to get the belt around it.

The good news on cost: belts and rollers are among the least expensive parts in a dryer, and a dryer is the appliance most often worth repairing — it is a drum, a motor, a heater and a fan, so there is less to fail and less that is expensive when it does.

Not to be confused with

  • Nothing happens at all when you press Start. Different symptom, and mostly free causes — see a dryer that will not start, which begins with holding the button for two to five seconds.
  • The drum turns but nothing dries. That is heat or airflow, not the drive. See a dryer that is not heating.

From free to expensive

Door opened mid-cycle. Normal. Close it, press Start/Pause.

Stopped partway through a big load. The clothes expanded. LG says so directly, and it is the explanation nobody offers.

Towels or jeans on their own. GE’s named cause of a slipping belt.

Empty drum, spins freely by hand. The belt. A service call, but on one of the cheaper parts in the machine.

Empty drum, resists your hand, still will not turn. Rollers, idler or motor — and if it has been noisy for a while, that is the fault announcing itself in advance.
