No Ice but the Water Dispenser Works? That Narrows It a Lot

Working water proves the supply, valve and filter are fine, so the fault is inside the ice maker itself — and the first check is a temperature, not a part.

A working water dispenser is diagnostic information, not just a detail. It proves the supply line is open, the shutoff valve is on, the inlet valve is operating and the filter is passing water — because all of those sit upstream of both the dispenser and the ice maker.

So the entire water-supply half of the usual troubleshooting list is already ruled out before you start. Whatever is wrong is on the ice-making side.

That is worth being explicit about, because most guidance for this problem opens by telling you to check the water supply and change the filter. If water comes out of the door, you have already tested both.

Start with the things that are not faults

Two of the most common causes are not failures at all.

The ice maker is switched off. Whirlpool names this directly as a common reason an ice maker produces no ice: it was turned off, usually by accident. The control might be a switch inside the freezer, a slider on the ice maker itself, or a setting on the door panel depending on your model.

The fill arm is raised. Models with a mechanical arm use it to detect a full bucket — when ice pushes the arm up, production stops. A bag of frozen peas resting against it does exactly the same thing, permanently. If your model has an arm, look at where it is sitting.

Neither of these costs anything, and between them they account for a large share of ice makers declared broken.

Then the temperature, and mind the number

This is the most common real cause, and it comes with a trap.

Whirlpool’s guidance is that the freezer must be between 0 and 5°F — that is −17 to −15°C — for ice production.

You will find pages quoting 0°C for this. That is not the same number, it is not the US figure, and it comes from documentation written for other markets. A freezer sitting at 0°C is barely at freezing point and will not run an ice maker properly. If you set your freezer by that figure you will conclude the ice maker is broken when the appliance is simply too warm to make ice.

Measure with a thermometer rather than trusting the panel display, and let it settle for a few hours before reading it.

Note the direction of the fix, too. If your freezer is warmer than that range, the answer is colder — but resist the instinct to go far below it. Running a freezer well under its target causes its own problems, and Frigidaire explicitly warns that settings below the recommended point can cause frost.

Then look for a blockage

Ice that partially melted — during a power cut, a door left open, or a defrost cycle running long — refreezes into a solid bridge. The ice maker keeps producing, the bucket keeps filling, and nothing comes out of the chute.

Unplug the refrigerator, take the bucket out, and break the mass up by hand. Check the chute as well. This looks like a dead ice maker and is not one.

Give it time before judging

An ice maker that has been switched off, refilled, or reset has to bring an empty metal mould down to temperature before the first cycle completes. Judging it an hour later tells you nothing.

This is the same mistake people make after clearing demo mode — checking too early, seeing no result, and concluding the fix failed. Leave it overnight.

The filter, for completeness

Whirlpool recommends replacing the water filter every six months, and a restricted filter genuinely can starve an ice maker.

But apply the logic from the top of this article: the dispenser and the ice maker are fed through the same filter. If water is flowing normally from the door, a fully clogged filter is unlikely. A partially restricted one is still possible — the ice maker needs a specific fill volume per cycle and is less tolerant of low flow than a dispenser you can simply hold down for longer.

If your filter is overdue, change it anyway. Just do not expect it to be the answer when the water side is visibly working.

Where most of these end

Most of these end at a switch, an arm, a temperature setting, or a lump of ice — none of which cost anything.

The genuine part failures on the ice-making side, once the water supply is proven by a working dispenser, are the ice maker’s own module or its fill valve. Both are model-specific parts, and the route to the right one is your model number in a retailer’s fitment tool rather than a part number matched to a symptom.
